400 Anniversary of the Visit of Philip II to Portugal

In 2019, we celebrated the 400th anniversary of the visit of Philip II to Portugal.

The carriage used for this trip (Coche de Filipe II), the oldest in the collection of MNCoches, was brought by King Philip II (III of Spain) at the time of his visit to Lisbon, to attend his son’s oath as successor to the Portuguese crown in 1619.

This car is characterized by being robust on the outside, serving its travel function, and rich inside, both in terms of decoration and comfort.

Archaic, heavy and difficult to maneuver, it has a typical Spanish decoration: leather-covered and decorated with golden studs, and inside, the ceiling is decorated with gold-leaf wood.

Known in Portugal by the Pious, Philip II reigned for 23 years. He died during his visit to Lisbon when he was 42 years old.
