Temporary Exhibition | Fire! Fire! Help, help!

An ancient and populous city, Lisbon has always been subject to fires. For this reason, initiatives to ensure the prevention and combat of accidents are already medieval as an essential activity for the city, its heritage and the well-being of its inhabitants.

Holding since then the authority over the management of this service, the municipality of Lisbon has never ceased to exercise it. But it is with the acquisition of the first hydraulic pumps carried by men that the adventure of the prodigious machines for extinguishing fires and rescuing people begins and progresses towards an increasingly specialized organization.

Shown in the Old Royal Riding School of the National Coach Museum, the temporary exhibition «Fire! Fire! Help, help!», shows the history of providing assistance in Lisbon, between the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 20th century, representative of the identity and memories of the city’s firefighters.

The pieces presented belong to the museological collection of the Fire Brigade Regiment of Lisbon, with strong identity value for firefighters, and with great heritage value for the city of Lisbon, being its safeguard and dissemination of the utmost importance.
