Synopsis
«The Queen’s Tournament: the solidarity of the Portuguese people»
To fulfil its functions as a cultural institution, the National Coach Museum undertakes, amongst others, the mission of holding temporary exhibitions. The main purpose of these temporary exhibits is to show objects that are part of the Museum’s collection under different interpretations and perspectives.
These objects presented in dialogue with others from other institutions and private collections allow us to create new narratives and possibilities of analysis not only for those who regularly visit the Museum, but also for those who don’t usually visit this Museum. With these exhibits, the National Coach Museum seeks to maintain and retain new audiences.
Based on this premise and given that the Museum possesses in its collection several objects directly related to equestrian games in general and to a specific tournament held on April 24th, 1892, in particular, it made sense to organize a temporary exhibition based on the theme, under the title «The Queen’s Tournament: the solidarity of the Portuguese people».
The exhibition opened on December 19th, 2023, and will stay until May 2024. It will describe the background that led to this event, its main sponsor, when how and where it took place, its subsequent consequences and the act of appreciation from the queen to all those that, somehow, made the tournament possible.
